I knew this book was going to be a winner! I love the illustrations; evoking emotions from young and old, Zeno takes us into a world of wonder and exploration. The look of joy on the face of the main character; a little girl with a new baby sibling, gave me feelings of warmth and joy. ‘This Small Blue Dot’ has also been shortlisted for CBCA Book of the year: New Illustrator Award for 2021! I really hope it wins.

As an educator, there are so many themes to pick up on and discuss:
- care for the environment
- respect and appreciation of other cultures
- acknowledging our ancestors and first peoples
- journey through life with ups and downs
- grandparents
- solar system and space
- love for siblings and family
Discussions can be had including the use of the illustrators colour to evoke emotion and how the illustrations tell the story. A stand out picture book that is one of my favourites to use in the library.
