CBCA Book Week 2021 – the jewel 💎 in the librarian’s crown is approaching with speed! Despite widespread lockdowns affecting many, book week is going ahead on 21-27 August 2021. It might be a different type of Book Week but it certainly doesn’t need to be boring! It is the perfect time to bring some cheer and fun to children missing their friends and old routine. Dressing up, virtual author visits, online book parties and fun activities will make a world of difference this year to students.

This year the theme really lets the imagination run wild –‘Old worlds, New Worlds, Other worlds’. The artwork featured on the poster below was created by artist, writer and film maker Shaun Tan. Drawing on his book, The Arrival, his own experiences of fatherhood and coming out of a difficult lockdown in 2020 Melbourne has culminated in this creative and unique expression of this years theme.

Activity! Thinking 🤔 critically and creatively – analyse the images in Shaun Tan’s artwork. What do they represent? Do they represent Old world/New world/Other world? Create your own poster for the book week theme – what would you include and why?

Janet's Writing Blog

I write southern historical fiction, local history, and I've written a devotional book. The two novels I'm writing are set in Virginia and the Carolinas in the 1760s. My weekly blog started out to follow my journey as a writer and a reader, but in 2025 it has been greatly expanded to include current events and politics in the United States as I see our democracy under attack from within. The political science major in me cannot sit idly by and remain silent.
